Welcome to the Lure Of Self Destruction
This is a podcast all about Self Harm, this deeply stigmatised and taboo topic is often little understood by society. People are judged, punished, dismissed, insulted for going through this very real and distressing experience and I believe that the best way to counter these myths and stigmas is to both talk openly about the real experiences of people and to make some of what science knows about the human brain and our behaviours more accessible to those outside of accidemia.
My name is Hazel, I studied Neuroscience at university and started Gradurate Medicine before my own mental illness made it impossible for me to contine. I am now studying Forensic Psychology at the open university, and despite it being many years since I left the neuro/medicine pathway I still try to keep as up to date with current research as I can.
I have a very long history of self harm – including self injury, suicidal behaviours, and eating disorders. I also have a diagnosis of a psychotic illness (schizoaffective disorder) and host another podcast called Reality Tourists on the topic of psychosis.
